The Norwich–based Greek yogurt-maker Chobani topped all other area businesses appearing on a new list of the fastest-growing private companies in the country.

Inc. Magazine released its annual Inc. 5000 list yesterday, ranking the nation’s private firms with the most rapidly increasing revenue. Chobani ranked 117th on the list, ahead of all other businesses in the region and behind only four other companies in New York state.

Chobani secured its high ranking by posting three-year revenue growth of 2,662 percent between 2008 and 2011. The yogurt-maker tallied $633.9 million in revenue in 2011, up from $23 million in 2008.

The company also added 1,206 jobs in those three years, giving it 1,265 total employees, according to the magazine.

Companies’ ranks on the list reflect their percentage revenue growth between 2008 and 2011. The list includes only privately-held, for-profit firms that are independent and based in the United States. Its minimum revenue requirement for 2008 was $100,000, and its minimum revenue requirement for 2011 was $2 million.

The companies appearing on the 2012 list tallied a median growth rate of 97 percent. They reported creating a total of over 400,000 jobs over three years.
