SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh has announced that 23 Syracuse small businesses will use grant funding to “adapt to the challenges presented by COVID-19.”

The Syracuse Economic Development Corporation (SEDCO) awarded $150,000 in grants to help the award recipients. The winter round of SEDCO COVID-19 grants will assist businesses in 13 different city neighborhoods, per Walsh’s office.

Awards ranged in size from $1,800 to $9,150, it added.

SEDCO’s grants will help pay for investments that include supplies; equipment and enclosures for outdoor dining; technology and marketing for takeout and online commerce; air purification, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and ultraviolet lighting for air filtration and advanced sanitization; and personal protective equipment (PPE) for the safety of staff and customers.

“Just as many of our small businesses were regaining momentum, the change of seasons brought with it a resurgence of the COVID-19 virus and new threats to our business community. These SEDCO grants will help City businesses adapt to the challenges of pandemic in the winter months,” Mayor Walsh said. “Small businesses are the life blood of our local economy but they are also the most at risk from the impact of the pandemic. I’m grateful to the SEDCO board for answering the call once again.”

Restaurants, cafes, and eateries accounted for 18 of the 23 grant recipients. Other awardees include a child-care service; a lead inspection company; a retail store; a theater; and a medical-transportation business. The grant recipients also included 10 that are minority or women-owned businesses.

The SEDCO winter COVID-19 grant program is the second SEDCO small-business support program during the pandemic.  The Corporation had earlier provided support funding totaling more than $510,000 to small businesses in the spring.

If interested in information on future SEDCO grant and loan programs, you can send an email to business@syrgov.net, Walsh’s office said.
