The Syracuse, Utica–Rome, and Elmira regions lost 600 or fewer jobs each in the last year, while the Watertown–Fort Drum, Ithaca, and Binghamton areas each added 500 or fewer jobs.

That’s according to the monthly employment report for January that the New York State Department of Labor issued on Thursday.

The Syracuse region lost 500 jobs between January 2017 and January 2018, a decline of 0.2 percent.

The Binghamton region added 100 jobs, an increase of 0.1 percent in the past 12 months.

The Elmira area lost 400 jobs in the past year, a decline of 1.1 percent.

New York state as a whole gained more than 91,000 jobs, an increase of 1 percent, in that 12-month period.

New York state’s unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.7 percent in January. The rate was higher than the U.S. unemployment rate of 4.1 percent in January.

The federal government calculates New York’s unemployment rate partly based upon the results of a monthly telephone survey of 3,100 state households that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics conducts.
