CNY Red Cross leader, Taravella, leaving for similar job in New Jersey

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Rosie Taravella, head of the Central New York Red Cross since 2012, will be leaving next month for New Jersey.

She has accepted the role of CEO of the New Jersey Region for the American Red Cross.

Taravella became regional CEO for the American Red Cross of Central New York in early 2012. In late 2014, her region was expanded to include Western New York, providing oversight for 26 counties, according to a release from the Red Cross. She was named “Nonprofit Executive of the Year” in the 2014 Nonprofit Awards put on by BizEventz and BJNN.

Taravella will succeed former New Jersey Red Cross CEO Ana Montero who is now chief of the Hurricane Maria recovery program in Puerto Rico.

“I am proud and humbled to have been selected for this promotion by senior leaders of our national organization,” Taravella said in the release. “It is bittersweet for me, as Western and Central New York has been my six-year home. Along the way, I have been treated to the most committed colleagues and volunteers anyone could ask for, who appreciate the history of our territory and continue to work to make it great.”

Ken Turner, regional disaster officer, will serve as interim CEO of the American Red Cross of Central New York while a permanent candidate is sought, the Red Cross said.
