SYRACUSE  —  Gov. Andrew Cuomo and a team of state experts visited Syracuse yesterday to hear the Central New York Regional Economic Development Council describe its first year of progress and pitch projects for future funding.

Cuomo toured project sites that received state funding through last year’s regional economic development council initiative, which awarded funding totaling $103.7 million to 74 projects in Central New York. The regional council then made its case for projects it has endorsed for funding this year.

Its presentation comes after it submitted a one-year progress report to the state on Sept. 14. That report asked for about $50 million in new state aid for a total of 85 projects.

The council is vying for a chunk of up to $762 million in state aid that is available through the regional council effort this year. Central New York’s $103.7 million award was the largest in the state last year, when a total of $785 million was up for grabs.

The Syracuse stop was the first in a statewide Regional Economic Development Council Progress Tour for Cuomo and his Strategic Implementation Assessment Team. That team is slated to review strategy updates, project progress, and performance in each of the state’s 10 economic-development regions.
