CNY teams perform well at state business plan competition

Teams from Cornell University, Clarkson University, and Syracuse University (SU) took top spots at this year’s New York State Business Plan Competition.

The event drew 120 teams of students from 25 colleges and universities. The competition took place yesterday at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) of the University at Albany.

SofGrip Robotics of Cornell, ShowCode of SU, and Innovative Delivery Systems of Clarkson all won their respective categories. They each took home $10,000 in cash and more than $2,000 in in-kind services.

Strong Arm Technologies of the Rochester Institute of Technology won the competition’s grand prize of $50,000 in cash and $20,000 in in-kind services. The company is developing a garment that helps reduce fatigue and risk for employees lifting heavy objects.

Helios, a company launched at SU, won last year’s competition.

“This endeavor affords students a unique opportunity to bridge their classroom and laboratory experiences with real-world business applications, and in the process, to set the stage for tomorrow’s entrepreneurs to enjoy success in the business world,” Bruce Kingma, associate provost for entrepreneurship and innovation at SU, said in a news release.
