New York State has awarded more than $88 million to 91 projects in Central New York as the part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s 2018 Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) competition.
That’s the highest award that any of the state’s 10 regions received and earned Central New York the “top performer” designation from Cuomo.
Elsewhere, the state awarded more than $85 million for 77 projects in the Mohawk Valley, over $65 million for 101 projects in the Southern Tier, and nearly $65 million for 70 projects in the North Country.
State officials announced the funding awards during a ceremony held Tuesday in Albany.
Central New York has consistently done well in the competition. After eight rounds, the REDC serving Central New York has received $703.6 million for 708 projects; the Mohawk Valley has been allocated $615 million for 640 projects; the Southern Tier received $613.3 million for 655 projects; and the North Country obtained $614.3 million for 607 projects, Cuomo’s office said.
Some of the projects to be funded by the REDC awards include the following.
Central New York
Acropolis Development of Syracuse will use $800,000 for work on 333-49 S. Salina St. in a project it’s calling Jefferson Center redevelopment. The first phase involves purchasing and rehabilitating the two-building property for commercial use. Tenants will include the Acropolis Realty Group, which will relocate and expand; a large food hall and wine bar; and a mortgage company, which will relocate from its suburban location, per the state’s awards document.
Empire State Development (ESD) will award SAF GLAS, LLC $8 million and the firm will invest about $59 million to relocate its Florida manufacturing and research and development operations for EnergyGlass to Jamesville. The project will include the purchase of land and existing facility renovations and new construction, as well as the purchase and installation of machinery and equipment.
The City of Syracuse, in collaboration with Le Moyne College and the Town of Dewitt, will use $100,000 to undertake a public-planning process to develop a neighborhood plan targeting the areas immediately adjacent to the campus. The goal is supporting the growth of Le Moyne, while “fostering the integration of the campus with the community,” the state says.
Onondaga County will use more than $2.2 million for a green-infrastructure project at NBT Bank Stadium.
Mohawk Valley
ESD will award Human Technologies Corporation of Utica $1.935 million to build a new logistics facility and create new job opportunities for individuals living with disabilities.
Griffiss Local Development Corporation will receive $1.25 million from Empire State Development to develop modern, mixed-use, amenity-rich housing and offices to help high-tech companies in Griffiss Business & Technology Park attract young professionals.
Southern Tier
Broome County will receive $620,000 from Empire State Development to create an innovative, modernized complex that serves the region’s veterans by providing resources including workforce development, civilian reintegration, and mental and physical well-being services.
ESD will award Corning Community College $1 million for workforce training through a partnership with public and private entities in the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM).
North Country
ESD will award Carthage Area Hospital $3 million to consolidate two of its outpatient clinic facilities, administration building, and hospital by constructing a new medical campus. The $65 million Medical Village is a one-stop medical facility with access to all levels of medical care and is designed to address the “significant access challenges to rural care,” Cuomo’s office said.
Omniafiltra, a paper-based manufacturing company in Lewis County, will receive $114,000 from Empire State Development for production equipment. This $570,000 project will result in improved energy efficiencies and expand the range of product capability at the plant.
