HAMILTON, N.Y. — Colgate University men’s basketball head coach Matt Langel has agreed to a contract extension at the university through 2030.

The contract extension comes after Langel, in his 11th year as Colgate head coach, led the program to its third 20-win season, third Patriot League regular season and tournament championships in four years, and a second straight trip to the NCAA tournament.

“The leadership of this institution, the support we’ve received, the excitement of a new athletics facility on the horizon, and the partnership that we’ve had makes me feel really good about what we’re continuing to do,” Langel said in a news release issued by Colgate on Tuesday morning. “To get a commitment like Colgate has given to us — I’ll never take that for granted and I am extremely appreciative.”

No financial terms of the contract extension were disclosed.

Langel was recently named a finalist for the Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year Award, annually presented to the top Division I mid-major coach in college basketball. He became Colgate’s winningest coach of all-time this past season and guided the Raiders to their fifth Patriot League championship behind a 23-12 overall record and 16-2 mark in conference play. Colgate was a No. 14 seed in the Midwest Region in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, losing in the first round to Wisconsin, 67-60, after having been tied at halftime. Earlier in the season, Colgate notched a signature 100-85 win over Syracuse at the Carrier Dome for the Raiders’ first win over the Orange since 1962.

“I am so very pleased that we have extended Coach Langel’s contract, solidifying the strong leadership of Colgate Men’s Basketball,” Nicki Moore, Colgate VP and director of athletics, said in the release. “I am confident in the positive student-athlete experience Matt and his staff facilitate, and in their commitment to excellence on and off the court. I am also looking forward to continuing to work with Matt as a colleague. He is a leader, a teacher, a learner, and a mentor who operates with integrity, and embodies the unique space in Division I that Colgate occupies — the opportunity to pursue true excellence in academics, athletics, and in life.”

Langel has posted a 176-165 record in his 11 seasons as Colgate’s men’s basketball head coach, including an 86-34 mark in the last four seasons. Before being named Colgate head coach in April 2011, Langel was an assistant coach at Temple for five seasons and an assistant at Penn for two seasons before that. He was a star basketball player for Penn from 1996-2000.
