UTICA, N.Y. — The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties awarded more than $15.7 million in grants, scholarships, and emergency relief funds in 2024, the highest amount awarded in a single year in the foundation’s history, the organization announced.
The foundation also marked the second-highest amount of donations on record, receiving more than $16 million during the year.
During 2024, The Community Foundation made commitments in support of several major community projects and programs including a $200,00 investment to launch Blaque Acres Farm, $450,000 to support a new childcare facility in Herkimer County, and $300,000 to the Mid-Utica Neighborhood Preservation Corporation to help build the organization’s capacity.

In 2024, the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties held a number of rounds. The Education, Health, and Science Grant rounds awarded $367,000 to 16 organizations supporting outcomes-driven programs or projects. The Equity Grant Round allocated $234,700 to 21 organizations addressing the fundamental causes of systemic racism and socioeconomic inequity that impact historically marginalized populations. The Library Grand Round awarded $35,000 to 21 libraries for program-related expenses, physical structure updates, or technology upgrades. The First Responders Grant Round distributed more than $20,000 to 17 organizations across the United States to support the education, training, lifesaving equipment, and mental-health needs of fire, emergency medical services, and law enforcement agencies. The Senior Grant Round awarded more than $340,300 to 32 organizations that provide programs and services focused on the health and wellbeing of older adults.
Through its Helpful Harvest Grant Round, the foundation awarded $100,000 to 36 organizations including food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters to help alleviate food insecurity and support increased need around the holidays and colder months. An additional $30,000 was granted directly from donor-advised funds in support of 16 organizations.
The Community Foundation’s donor-advised funds awarded 761 grants totaling more than $5.7 million to support 368 organizations locally and across the country.
The foundation also provided more than $415,000 to 155 students through 70 different scholarship funds.
Following the July 16, 2024, tornado that damaged downtown Rome, the Community foundation established the Rome NY Emergency Response Fund, which raised about $2 million. More than 500 residents received emergency funds to aid in their recovery efforts.
The Community Foundation also saw the creation of a number of new funds during the year.
