TYRE, N.Y. — The partners in the $425 million Lago Casino & Resort project say construction at the site in the Finger Lakes town of Tyre will resume “immediately.”
Rochester–based Wilmorite Inc. on July 13 announced it had suspended construction on the project following a court ruling three days earlier that said the Town of Tyre didn’t meet a requirement on its environmental finding on the project.
After additional work on the environmental-review process in the weeks that followed, the Tyre Town Board “unanimously” approved the final site plan for the Lago facility during its meeting held Thursday night, according to a news release Lago issued on Friday.
The Town of Tyre on Oct. 1 had determined that Lago “will not have a significant adverse impact on the environment,” according to Lago.
The pace of construction in the coming weeks and months will depend on the weather and the timing of when the New York State Gaming Commission issues casino licenses, according to project partners — Thomas Wilmot, Sr., chairman of Wilmorite, and M. Brent Stevens, managing member of Peninsula Pacific.
The New York Gaming Facility Location Board last December selected Lago and two other casinos to apply for licenses from the state Gaming Commission.
The state Gaming Facility Location Board on Oct. 14 also selected Tioga Downs Casino Racing & Entertainment for the state’s fourth and final casino-gaming license.
The construction at Lago will move forward, but not all residents of that area are happy about it.
More than 4,400 have signed a petition or signed letters against the casino, according to the website www.casinofreetyre.com
In its name, the opposition group spells casino with the letters “n” and “o” in capital letters.
Lago officials say the casino project will create more than 2,000 construction jobs and about 1,800 permanent positions at the facility located between Rochester and Syracuse.
