Crews complete nearly $11 million runway-improvement project at Syracuse airport

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Regional Airport Authority (SRAA) on Friday announced that crews have finished construction of the nearly $11 million runway 10-28 rehabilitation project.

The contractors completed the work “ahead of schedule” in an effort that lasted about five months, the SRAA said in its Friday news release.

The project included the remediation and reconstruction of the primary runway at Syracuse Hancock International Airport.

In addition to the work that was done on the asphalt, crews also installed new lighting and signage to “further enhance” safety upgrades to the main runway.

Seneca Stone Corp. of Seneca Falls was the prime contractor on the project, the airport’s communications team tells CNYBJ in an email. In addition, Ridley Electrical completed the electrical subcontracting work and C&S Companies, which is located near the airport, handled design and construction-management duties.

During construction, the Syracuse airport’s primary east-west runway (10-28) was closed, and the airport’s southeast-northwest runway (15-33) served as the primary runway. As a result, SRAA says residents in the vicinity of the airport noticed a change in air-traffic patterns, including low-flying aircraft.

“We are pleased to announce that despite the exceptionally-above average rainfall this summer — and subsequent weather delays — we reopened 10-28 this afternoon, approximately two weeks ahead of schedule,” Jason Terreri, executive director of Syracuse Hancock International Airport, said. “We appreciate our neighbors’ patience and understanding as we continue our mission of providing a safe and secure airport to the community.”
