Crews to renovate Mary H. Soderberg Aquatic Center at Skaneateles Community Center

SKANEATELES, N.Y. — The Skaneateles Community Center (SCC) says its Mary H. Soderberg Aquatic Center is undergoing a $900,000 renovation project.

The effort will include several upgrades to enhance the facility and provide a “better experience” for its members, per its announcement.

The project was made possible with an investment by Elsa Soderberg, a lifelong community member and former SCC trustee, along with Joanne Cross, also a lifelong community member and current SCC trustee.

Due to renovations, the aquatic center is currently closed and has been closed since April 15, per the SCC website. The Skaneateles Community Center expects renovations will be completed on or before May 20.

“We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of donors like Elsa and Joanne, who recognize the importance of the center to our community,” Bill Marquardt, chairman, Skaneateles Recreational Charitable Trust, said. “This project has been in the works for some time, and we are thrilled to bring it to fruition. The upgrades will improve the overall experience for our members and provide a healthier and more comfortable environment for everyone who uses the facility.”

The renovation project will include the installment of two new natatorium dehumidification units to provide better air quality and temperature control, fabric ductwork designed and installed to optimize chloramine removal, a new boiler and sand filtration system, updates to the utility control systems, and resurfacing of the pool.

In addition to improved aesthetics, the new surfaces will enable the SCC’s staff to keep the pools clean and maintain the proper balance of chemicals to “ensure a safe and healthy swimming environment,” SCC said.

“We understand this renovation may cause some inconvenience to our members, but we believe that the end result will be worth it,” Marquardt said. “We look forward to welcoming everyone back to the new and improved aquatic center in the near future.”
