Cuomo gets high marks in new poll

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has high job approval ratings in a new poll from the Siena Research Institute (SRI) at Siena College.

The governor is viewed favorably by 74 percent of voters and unfavorably by 18 percent. More than 60 percent gave him a positive job performance rating, compared with 37 percent negative.

Plans Cuomo has touted to link school aid increases to implementation of a new teacher evaluation system and a new pension tier for future state employees also garnered strong support from voters, according to the poll.

“Democrats and Republicans don’t generally see eye-to-eye on most issues or politicians, however, when it comes to Andrew Cuomo, it’s hard to see much difference between those on the right and those on the left,” Siena pollster Steven Greenberg said in a news release. “Cuomo is viewed favorably by 75 percent of Democrats, 73 percent of independents, and 71 percent of Republicans. Even two-thirds of self-identified conservatives view him favorably.

Still, nearly three-quarters of voters oppose a pay hike for the governor, two-thirds oppose raises for state legislators and more than three-quarters oppose raises for commissioners of state agencies, according to the poll.
