BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday that he will be signing an executive order that authorizes private businesses to deny entry to people who do not wear a mask or face covering.
“When we’re talking about reopening stores and places of business, we’re giving the store owners the right to say if you’re not wearing a mask, you can’t come in,” the governor said. “You don’t want to wear a mask, fine, but you don’t have a right to then go into that store if that store owner doesn’t want you to.”
Many stores have already posted signs, asking customers to don a face covering before entering. This order will add some more muscle behind those policies.
The announcement came as more businesses prepare to restart in phase two of New York State’s regional reopening plan.
