MAINE, N.Y. — Delta Airlines will resume daily flights from Binghamton to Detroit, beginning in January, according to Broome County Executive Jason Garnar.

Delta will offer daily flights from the Greater Binghamton airport (BGM), located in the town of Maine, to Detroit Metro Airport (DTW), starting on Jan. 8. In order to allow for new flights to Delta’s Detroit hub, the airline will discontinue its current daily BGM to LGA (LaGuardia Airport in New York City) flight.

“Detroit has historically been a great connection for our community,” Garnar said in a press release. “Detroit is the primary Asian gateway for the eastern United States, and it also provides service to many destinations in the Americas and Europe.”

In addition to expanding the number of connections, Delta will utilize the larger CRJ-900 aircraft to accommodate 76 passengers on each flight with two-class service. Previous BGM to DTW flights offered seating for 50 with just one class.

“We had great success with Delta’s hub in DTW in the past on a smaller plane,” Broome County Commissioner of Aviation Mark Heefner said. “Now, our business and leisure travelers should be able to fully utilize the opportunities afforded by the larger plane that will provide at least two classes of service, creating more comfortable flights with additional amenities. Additionally, [with] the return of the early morning flight time on this route, it will allow for better access to more connections both domestically and internationally.”

The schedule is expected to include an early morning non-stop flight to Detroit to allow for connections to morning departures, international routes, and west-coast connections leaving from Detroit. The return flight will leave DTW in the evening, landing late evening at BGM.
