SYRACUSE — Dermody, Burke & Brown, CPAs, LLC (DB&B), a Syracuse–based accounting firm, has expanded its business footprint in the Mohawk Valley.

The firm has added Barone, Howard & Co., CPAs, P.C., an accounting and consulting firm with offices in New Hartford and Rome.

As of Nov. 1, Barone, Howard & Co. began operating under the Dermody, Burke & Brown name, the Syracuse firm announced Dec. 2.

The combination of these two firms will “enhance” client-service capabilities by “providing additional resources and expanded services,” Dermody, Burke & Brown contends.

“What it really provided for us was added depth in our existing New Hartford office,” says Madelyn Hornstein, CEO of Dermody, Burke & Brown, who spoke with CNYBJ on Dec. 3. “We’ve basically combined forces.”

Hornstein didn’t release any terms of the deal, but did note that, “No money changes hands upon this combination.”

Dermody, Burke & Brown added four principals with CPA (certified public accountant) credentials and nine associates in the combination.

With Barone, Howard’s 13 workers, Dermody, Burke & Brown’s employee count increases to more than 90.

The combination also expands the firm’s geographic footprint with the Rome office, which Dermody, Burke & Brown is “hoping to expand” in the future, Hornstein notes.

She declined to disclose the number of clients that Barone, Howard has been servicing.

Barone, Howard’s New Hartford employees relocated to DB&B’s newly expanded, 5,000-square-foot office in New Hartford.

Charles A. Gaetano Construction Corp. handled the expansion project at DB&B’s New Hartford office and finished the work in a few months. Bonacci Architects PLLC of Utica completed the design work, according to Hornstein.

When asked if DB&B pursued the expansion project for this deal, Hornstein replied, “Yes.”

John Barone, CPA and former managing partner at Barone, Howard, said the combination “was the right fit for us and our clients based on the mutual values we share. We look forward to expanding our scope of services and footprint.”

About the firms

Founded in 1956, Dermody, Burke & Brown describes itself as “one of the largest, locally owned and independent certified public accounting firms in Central New York.” The firm serves the region from four offices in Syracuse, Auburn, New Hartford, and now Rome. More than 75 percent of the firm’s client base is comprised of closely-held and family owned businesses.

Founded by John Barone and John Howard in 1981, Barone, Howard & Co. has “extensive experience” in privately owned businesses.
