CAMILLUS — A Skaneateles–based developer is moving forward with plans to transform the former Camillus Cutlery Co. facility into a mixed-use medical center.
Sweet Spot Development is working to renovate a vacant 45,000-square-foot building on the former Camillus Cutlery Co. property at 52-54 Genesee St. in the village of Camillus. The building, which has been vacant since Camillus Cutlery shuttered it in 2007, will hold medical-wellness office space as well as second-floor apartments.
Sweet Spot wants to start moving tenants into the revamped facility in the summer or fall of 2013.
The developer is renaming the site Camillus Mills. Camillus Mills, LLC acquired buildings and land at 52-54 Genesee St. on May 30 for $231,000, according to records from Onondaga County’s Office of Real Property Tax Services.
Two medical practices have agreed to open in the facility, which will be remodeled in multiple phases, according to Sweet Spot. However, the developer is not releasing the tenants’ names at this point, describing them only as well-established multi-office practices.
“We are very pleased with the initial groups which have committed to Camillus Mills and are turning our attention to securing medical groups to help anchor the site,” Sweet Spot Cos. Operations Officer Roy Brunner said in a news release. “We are launching full-blown lease efforts within the next week to fill about 30,000 square feet of space remaining in phase I. We are positioned to provide competitive lease terms, a great location, and possible ownership opportunities to tenants.”
Sweet Spot is funding the work using a $2.5 million Restore New York grant. A portion of that grant also went to renovate a building across the street from Camillus Mills at 55 Genesee St.
The Camillus Mills project also involves demolishing buildings running along Nine Mile Creek and replacing them with parking and green space. Plans call for new buildings to be built on the site in later project phases.
