Direct Energy completes acquisition Iberdrola subsidiaries

BINGHAMTON — Houston–based Direct Energy completed its acquisition of NYSEG Solutions, Inc. and Energetix, Inc., energy retailers based in Binghamton and Rochester respectively.

Both companies are wholly owned subsidiaries of Iberdrola USA and Direct Energy bought them for $110.2 million in cash plus additional working capital. Iberdrola USA has more than 2.4 million customers in New York and throughout New England.

NYSEG Solutions and Energetix supply retail electricity and natural gas to approximately 245,000 residential and commercial consumers in New York and Pennsylvania. The addition of those customers to Direct Energy expands the Houston company’s reach in the Northeast to 1.3 million customers.

“We are pleased to welcome Energetix and NYSEG Solutions to the Direct Energy family and look forward to offering more customers in New York and Pennsylvania innovative energy solutions and superior customer service,” Direct Energy Residential President Steven Murray said in a release. “This deal builds on Direct Energy’s North American growth strategy and allows us to provide consumers with more choice and services when it comes to how they purchase and consume natural gas and electricity.”

Earlier this year, Direct Energy added 280,000 new Northeast customers when it acquired Vectren Source, a natural gas supplier in Ohio, Indiana, and New York. So far this year, Direct Energy has entered 22 new markets while growing its Northeast business to 1.3 million customers.

Based in Houston, Direct Energy (www.directenergy.com) has more than 6 million residential and commercial customers. The company is a subsidiary of Centrica plc, a global energy company.
