OWEGO, N.Y. — Early Owego Antique Center will begin offering live auctions in late February to expand its business located on the lower level of the former J.J. Newberry’s Building at 43-35 Lake St.

The new offering complements the existing business and builds on the owner’s long history in the auction industry.

Center co-owner and Principal Auctioneer Jim Mead, with 64 years of experience, will lead the auction team, assisted by his son James and associate Lucas Kaczynski. The Mead family got its start in auctions when Jim’s father Col. Jerry Mead founded Mead & Sons Auctioneers in Tioga County in 1946.

James Mead is a 2014 graduate of the Mendenhall School of Auctioneering while Kaczynski is a graduate of World Wide College of Auctioneering in West Des Moines, Iowa. He also served an apprenticeship in North Carolina, gaining experience in online listings and internet sales management. Fran Antalek, with nearly 30 years of experience in the industry, will manage the auction floor.

“We have noticed many changes in our business sector during and since COVID,” Jim Mead said in a release. “A significant victim has been the live community commission sale.”

The  return to live auctions coincides with the 75th anniversary of Mead & Sons Auctioneers.
