Projects in Central New York, the Mohawk Valley, and the North Country received funding yesterday from Empire State Development (ESD).
The board of the state’s economic development agency approved $24.9 million for projects across New York. The agency estimates the funding will create 236 jobs and retain 784 jobs statewide.
It approved $5 million to build an industrial access road for Marcy NanoCenter, a 420-acre site on the State University of New York (SUNY) Institute of Technology campus in Oneida County. The road will prepare the site to attract a semiconductor firm, ESD said. It will include storm-water swales, bioswales, a utility corridor, and lighting.

ESD’s board also OK’d $3 million for the New York Energy Regional Innovation Cluster in Onondaga County. The cluster is a consortium that includes the City University of New York and the SUNY Research Foundation and is led by Syracuse University. It will use grant money to fund laboratory construction in existing space at the Syracuse Center of Excellence and to help build a multimodal transportation facility there.
In the North Country, ESD will send $1.2 million to the Trudeau Institute, a nonprofit biomedical research organization in Franklin County. The money will allow the institute to continue its operations and grow its biomedical research laboratory at Saranac Lake, according to ESD.
ESD decided to award two grants to Slic Network Solutions, a for-profit company in Nicholville in the North Country. Slic Network Solutions will use a $2.2 million grant to help in its efforts to build 660 miles of fiber-optic cable to extend advanced broadband services to 5,856 households in St. Lawrence County. It will use a $425,987 grant to help lay 136 miles of cable to provide broadband access to 726 households in the western portion of Franklin County.
“We are supporting a broad range of job-creating projects and initiatives that incentivize business growth while leveraging over $100 million in additional investment that will strengthen the state’s economy,” ESD President, CEO, and Commissioner Kenneth Adams said in a news release.
