Excellus appoints new president for Central New York region

DeWITT, N.Y. — Excellus BlueCross BlueShield on Monday announced it has appointed Mark Muthumbi regional president of the health insurer’s Central New York market, effective immediately.

Muthumbi replaces Jim Reed, who became president and CEO-elect of Excellus BlueCross BlueShield and its parent company, The Lifetime Healthcare Companies, Inc. on July 1.

Muthumbi — who currently serves as regional VP of sales and account management at Excellus — is expanding his responsibilities to include the position of regional president’s role, the health insurer said.

“Over his 21-year career at Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, Mark has established strong relationships with customers, employers, providers, brokers, and community leaders across Central New York while developing collaborative approaches to deliver quality, drive change, and overall growth for the health plan,” Reed said in a statement.

In his new role as regional president, Muthumbi will combine his leadership of sales and account management with the additional responsibility of “supporting and maintaining” business and provider networks in Central New York, the health insurer said.

Rochester–based Excellus is Central New York’s largest health insurer. It has about 850 employees who work in the region. Excellus operates a regional office in DeWitt.
