Excellus board of directors elects Rattmann as new chairman

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The board of directors of Excellus BlueCross BlueShield has elected Thomas Rattmann as its new chairman.

He’ll also chair the board of directors of Excellus’s parent company, the Rochester–based Lifetime Healthcare Companies, Excellus said in a news release issued Wednesday.

Rattmann succeeds Thomas Hildebrandt in the chairman’s role.

Rattmann has been a member of Excellus’ governing board since 2010. He continues as chairman of the regional advisory board of Excellus BCBS’s Southern Tier region, Excellus said.

Rochester–based Excellus BlueCross BlueShield is Central New York’s largest health insurer.

Rattmann is also chairman of the board of Binghamton–based Columbian Financial Group, a firm that is mainly focused on the “issuance of small-face life-insurance products,” Excellus said. He retired as Columbian’s CEO last December.

In his career, Rattmann has served on boards of directors of life-insurance industry trade organizations. Those roles have included past chairman of the Albany–based Life Insurance Council of New York Inc. and as a director of the American Council of Life Insurers, a Washington, D.C.–based trade association.

He also has also served on the board of directors of various community organizations in the greater Binghamton area.
