DeWITT, N.Y. — Excellus BlueCross BlueShield has named Dr. Richard Lockwood VP and chief medical officer of the health insurer’s Central New York region.

He replaces Dr. Marybeth McCall, who is now serving as VP and chief medical officer of the Excellus Utica region, the company said in a news release.

Rochester–based Excellus is Central New York’s largest health insurer.

Lockwood has been serving as VP and chief medical officer of utilization management for Excellus since last July, the organization said.

He joined the company as a part-time associate medical director in 1999. Excellus later named Lockwood medical director for the company’s Central New York region in 2011.

Throughout his career, Lockwood has been in private practice locally with Onondaga Hill Internists, Family Care Medical Group, Van Duyn Home and Hospital, Loretto, and Hill Haven Nursing Home.

He has also served as medical director at Iroquois Nursing Home in Onondaga since 2005, Excellus said.

Lockwood is a clinical instructor at Upstate Medical University and has hospital privileges at the school’s Upstate University Hospital and Upstate University Hospital’s Community campus.

He had served as president of Community General Hospital’s medical staff prior to its merger with Upstate Medical University, according to Excellus.
