Excellus seeks applications from Utica/North Country nonprofits for $55K in community health awards

Nonprofit organizations in the Utica/North Country and Rochester regions can apply for a total of $55,000 in Excellus BlueCross BlueShield community-health award grants.

Nonprofits in Excellus’s 14-county Utica/North Country region and six-county Rochester region are invited to apply for awards of up to $4,000 each, the health insurer said in a news release.

The health plan’s 14-county Utica/North Country region includes Clinton, Delaware, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Montgomery, Oneida, Otsego and St. Lawrence counties.

Rochester–based Excellus is Central New York’s largest health insurer.

Organizations can use the award for programs that have “clear goals” to improve the health or health care of a specific population.

For the fall 2017 awards, Excellus will also consider funding nonprofits that are pursuing a new or innovative approach to improving community health.

“It can be hard for a small nonprofit to find the funds needed to try an innovative idea,” said Snow. “We’re hopeful that our community-health awards will provide at least one nonprofit with the support needed to launch a fresh approach to a critical health problem.”

The deadline to submit an application for consideration is Oct. 10.

Excellus expects to issue a total of $165,000 in community health awards by the end of 2017.

Earlier this year, the health insurer awarded $110,000 in grants to 36 nonprofits from throughout its entire 31-county upstate New York operating area, Excellus said.
