Exelis Rome location to perform work on new cyber contract

ROME — Defense contractor ITT Exelis (NYSE: XLS) won a contract from the U.S. Air Force to work on cyber technology for the military.

The deal is worth up to $300 million over a five-year period. Exelis is one of three large business prime contractors to receive one of the Agile Cyber Technologies awards. Three small business prime contractors also received awards.

Exelis will support research, development, prototyping, demonstration, evaluation, and transition of cyber technologies for military program offices and the Department of Defense, according to the company. The work includes a variety of services.

Exelis’ Rome site will perform the bulk of the work. The company’s team on the contract includes 16 small businesses, two academic institutions, and 13 large companies.

Exelis, based in McLean, Va., employs more than 20,000 people companywide and generated sales of $5.8 billion in 2011. The firm’s Rome location employs 150 people.
