ROME, N.Y. — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded Griffiss International Airport in Rome more than $2.8 million in federal funding.

Griffiss Airport will use the funding to construct a building for snow-removal equipment, U.S. Senators Charles Schumer (D–N.Y.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D–N.Y.) said in a news release that Schumer’s office issued.

The building will enable Griffiss to “safely and efficiently” store the tools that it uses to keep runways and taxiways clear “during all months of the year,” the lawmakers contend.

The FAA administers the funding, which is awarded through the airport-improvement program (AIP).

The AIP provides grants to public agencies for the planning and development of public-use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS).

Funds obligated for the AIP are drawn from the Airport and Airway Trust fund, which user fees, fuel taxes, and other similar revenue sources support.

“I am pleased to add this $2.8 million federal grant to the list of ‘arrivals’ at Griffiss International Airport,” Schumer said in the release. “The funding will help the airport enhance its safety and efficiency by allowing it to store the snow-removal equipment needed to protect the airport from wintry-weather conditions.
