SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded Syracuse Hancock International Airport more than $2.4 million for improvement projects.

The FAA allocated the funding through two grants, U.S. Senators Charles Schumer (D–N.Y.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D–N.Y.) said in a news release that Schumer’s office issued.

The first grant of more than $1.9 million will help pay for the replacement of two “outdated,” passenger-boarding bridges in the airport terminal.

The second grant of nearly $500,000 will help the airport design its reconfiguration of exit taxiways.

The effort seeks to “mitigate the risk” of runway incursions and “improve” passenger safety, the lawmakers said.

The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the funding through the airport-improvement program (AIP), which the FAA administers.

The AIP provides grants to public agencies for the planning and development of public-use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS). Funds obligated for the AIP are drawn from the Airport and Airway Trust fund, which user fees, fuel taxes, and other similar revenue sources support.
