FAA awards Syracuse Hancock International Airport $720K for passenger-boarding bridge

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded Syracuse Hancock International Airport a grant of $720,000 for the installation of a passenger-boarding bridge.

The FAA is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The funding for Syracuse Regional Airport Authority is part of the airport-improvement program (AIP), which the FAA administers, according to a joint news release on the grant from U.S. Senators Charles Schumer (D–N.Y.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D–N.Y.).

The boarding bridges are what allow passengers to board and depart aircraft from the concourse without actually having to … “walk outside in the elements,” says Christina Callahan, executive director of Hancock Airport.

“We have one gate, which currently does not have a passenger-boarding bridge … all of our gates should be fully accessible by the airlines and their aircraft,” she adds.

Callahan spoke with BJNN on Friday afternoon.

The new passenger bridge should be in place early in 2016, she says.

The airport-improvement program provides grants to public agencies for the planning and development of public-use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS), according to the senators’ news release.

Funds obligated for the AIP are drawn from the Airport and Airway Trust fund, which user fees, fuel taxes, and other similar revenue sources support.
