Federal grant to fund Upstate Medical University nurse-practitioner scholarships

SYRACUSE  —  The State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University’s College of Nursing will use a new two-year federal grant to fund scholarships for nurses who are studying to become primary-care nurse practitioners.

The Health Resources and Services Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is providing the grant. It is for $664,000.

“This support helps reduce the financial barriers for nurses who are seeking advanced training, and this is especially important as nurses continue to play a larger role in the front lines of medical care,” SUNY Upstate College of Nursing Dean Elvira Szigeti said in a news release.

Grant money will fund scholarships for students studying to become pediatric nurse practitioners, family nurse practitioners, and family psych-mental health nurse practitioners. The exact amount of each scholarship has yet to be determined, but it cannot exceed $22,000 for a full-time student or $11,000 for a part-time student.

About 400 full-time and part-time students study at SUNY Upstate’s College of Nursing.
