CICERO, N.Y. — Express Mart Franchising Corporation informed New York State that it will be laying off 53 employees beginning in July.
Speedway announced April 16 it was acquiring 78 Express Mart stores. Express Mart filed the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) the same day.
In the notice, Express Mart said the layoffs were because the company’s assets had been sold to Speedway. It said layoffs could continue through early December.

Speedway, a subsidiary of Marathon Petroleum Corp., said the Express Mart stores will be rebranded as Speedways. It expects the sale to close by the end of the third quarter.
Marathon is headquartered in Ohio and says it has 2,740 convenience stores in 21 states.
