Cornell University has tapped Greg Pass, the former chief technology officer at Twitter, to be the founding entrepreneurial officer at the technology campus it is developing in New York City.
Pass will be tasked with connecting the campus with the technology industry and with building its entrepreneurial culture. In addition to working with faculty members and administrators, he will direct student activities such as workshops and hackathons.
“In the tech industry, I’ve experienced firsthand how talented and entrepreneurial engineers are at the heart of productive change,” Pass said in a news release. “Now, I am honored to be joining the Cornell Tech team as we build a new kind of applied science education — one that will better cultivate young engineers for technological innovation and entrepreneurship, and create new value in collaboration with the startups and creative companies that are making New York City a world tech leader.”
Cornell is scheduled to start classes at its New York City campus, dubbed CornellNYC Tech, in the fall. Classes will take place in temporary space at a Google building in Manhattan until the campus’s permanent home, on Roosevelt Island, is ready.
On May 21, Google said it set aside 22,000 square feet of its New York City headquarters for CornellNYC Tech. The university will take over the space on July 1 and will be able to use it free of charge for five years and six months, or until the Roosevelt Island campus is complete. Cornell also has the option to expand to 58,000 square feet at Google’s building if it needs additional space.
“The tech campus is all about bringing together academic research and industry know-how, and no one has more relevant industry experience than Greg Pass,” CornellNYC Tech Dean Dan Huttenlocher said. “Greg advised Cornell throughout the proposal process, and now, by making the entrepreneurial officer one of the campus’s first hires, CornellNYC Tech is ensuring that the tech industry is part of what we do from the start.”
