Gaetano helps build new sports complex in Whitesboro

WHITESBORO — Accelerate Sports Complex, a 96,000-square-foot, multi-purpose indoor sports facility, has opened at 5241 Judd Road in Whitesboro.

 

The facility includes a full-size soccer field, three basketball courts, a running track suspended above the field, between eight and 10 indoor batting cages, a future 5,000-square-foot fitness center, locker and bathroom facilities, and a “juice bar.”

 

That’s according to David Kleps, vice president of design-build at the Charles A. Gaetano Construction Corp. of Utica.

 

Crews started construction last May and completed their work in late December, says Kleps, who spoke with CNYBJ on Feb. 26. 

 

Gaetano’s contract on the project “ended” at $4.5 million, he says. Fred Burrows, Jr., a partner in Fred Burrows Trucking & Excavating of Whitesboro, owns the development, according to Kleps.

 

Burrows handled all the site work and purchased the equipment for the sports complex, including turf and materials for the basketball courts, he adds.

 

CNYBJ was unable to reach Burrows for additional comment before press time.

 

Gaetano handled the design of the building’s shell, says Kleps. 

 

“The foundations, the custom Butler building, which included the running track and the stairs and everything that goes with the shell, all the structural components,” he adds.

 

Gaetano Construction has held the Butler Manufacturing franchise agreement for Oneida, Madison, and Herkimer counties since 1982, says Kleps. 

 

Butler also recently awarded Gaetano the franchise agreement for Onondaga County, he adds.

 

On its website, Butler Manufacturing describes itself as a “building-solutions company providing the design, manufacture, and marketing of metal-building systems for commercial construction.”

 

It is a division of Kansas City, Missouri–based BlueScope Buildings North America, Inc.

 

Gaetano used several subcontractors on the project, according to Kleps.

 

They included Paragon Supply, Inc. of Syracuse, which handled the masonry work, and Nathan Steel Corp. of Utica, which provided the steel for the project. 

 

In addition, Zumpano Construction of New Hartford handled the metal-stud drywall and ceiling work; Oneida Floor Co. Inc. of Utica handled the flooring installation; Kinlow Associates, Inc. of Syracuse provided the toilet partitions and accessories; and Brady Fence of Cold Brook (Herkimer County) installed the chain-link fencing. 

 

The subcontractors also included Winterton Painting, Inc. of Rome, which handled the painting duties; H.J. Brandeles Corp. of Utica, which served as the mechanical contractor handling plumbing and heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning work; abj Fire Protection Co. of DeWitt, which completed the fire-protection 

work; and the Utica division of Tonawanda–based Weydman Electric, Inc., which handled the electric work.

 

Kleps also credited the work of Gaetano’s Lucas Saltsman, who served as project manager on the Accelerate project and “ran the job, day to day.”
