Syracuse University head coach Gary Gait is the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) women’s lacrosse coach of the year. The league’s eight head coaches voted on the annual award, which was announced Wednesday morning, according to a Syracuse University news release.

Gait, 50, guided the Orange to a second-place finish in the ACC regular-season standings with a 5-2 record. Overall, Syracuse is 15-6, which includes seven wins against women’s lacrosse teams ranked in the top 20 in the latest RPI rankings. One of those wins came at No. 2 North Carolina on April 15.

The Orange women defeated No. 20 Virginia Tech and No. 12 Virginia in the ACC Tournament to advance to the finals for the fourth straight year, where Syracuse lost to the Tar Heels.

Gait was also named ACC Coach of the Year in 2015, per the release. In addition, he was the 2011 and 2012 Big East Coach of the Year when Syracuse was still in that conference. He has coached Syracuse since the 2008 season and has led the team to five straight appearances in the women’s lacrosse final four.

This year’s Orange squad, ranked No. 9, awaits the NCAA Tournament pairings, which will be announced on Sunday night.
