Gander Mountain to reopen Johnson City store this spring

JOHNSON CITY — Gander Mountain is planning to reopen its Johnson City store this spring, about two-and-a-half years after closing it due to flooding.

The Johnson City store is a 48,000-square-foot structure located at 528 Harry L Drive. The outdoor-gear retailer first opened it in 2004, but then shuttered the store in the fall of 2011, following severe area flooding caused by a pair of tropical storms.

“It was a sad day when flooding forced our Johnson City store to close a few years ago, so this is a great day for Gander Mountain, for those who love the outdoors, and who enjoy great traditions like hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, and camping,” David Pratt, Gander Mountain’s chairman and CEO, said in a news release.

The remodeled store will feature an “innovative interior design,” and is expected to bring as many as 70 jobs to the community, the retailer said.

“I am pleased to welcome Gander Mountain back to Johnson City. This is very exciting news and a benefit to the entire Triple Cities region,” Greg Deemie, mayor of Johnson City, said in the release.

The Johnson City store will offer an extensive selection of men’s and women’s active performance outdoor and casual apparel, and a wide variety of men’s and women’s active footwear, Gander Mountain said.

Gander Mountain, which says it is the nation’s largest and fastest growing retail network of outdoor specialty stores, is implementing an ongoing sizeable expansion companywide. In the past 18 months, it has opened 18 new stores located in nine states across the country. It has also announced plans to open another 11 stores in 2014, including the one in Johnson City.

St. Paul, Minn.–based Gander Mountain offers gear and accessories for hunting, fishing, camping, boating, and archery, as well as outdoor and casual apparel and footwear.
