Gillibrand visits CNY to push manufacturing bill

DeWITT — U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D–N.Y.) promoted a new manufacturing-assistance bill in DeWitt this afternoon.

The bill, which Gillibrand is touting as the first piece of legislation she introduced in the new Congress, is called the Made in America Manufacturing Act. It calls for setting up a federal-funding competition aimed at stoking the manufacturing industry. The legislation, which would allocate up to $20 million per statewide or regional manufacturing hub, specifically focuses on clean technology and high-tech production.

Gillibrand visited Inficon in DeWitt to talk about the bill this afternoon. That company, which is based in Switzerland, produces instrumentation, sensors, and process-control software.

“It’s time to see ‘Made in America’ again, starting right here in New York,” Gillibrand said in a news release. “I believe New York’s great manufacturing communities are well positioned to compete for funding that would help carry out their innovative ideas to spark more growth in high-tech manufacturing sectors, jump-start new businesses, and create good-paying jobs right here where we need them the most.”

Gillibrand’s bill would help set up revolving loan funds for expanding manufacturers. It would also help finance job-training programs and technical assistance.

Supporters of the bill include the Manufacturers Association of Central New York and CenterState CEO.
