CLINTON, N.Y. — Hamilton College President Joan Hinde Stewart has announced her plan to retire on June 30, 2016, after 13 years leading the liberal-arts college.
Stewart informed members of the Hamilton College board of trustees during its quarterly meeting in New York City. When she concludes her presidency in 18 months, she will be the eighth longest-serving president in the college’s 200-year history, Hamilton College said in a news release.
Stewart assumed the Hamilton College presidency on July 1, 2003. She was formerly dean of the College of Liberal Arts and professor of French at the University of South Carolina. The first in her family to earn a college degree, Stewart also joined the Hamilton College faculty as professor of French. She is the first female president in Hamilton’s 200-year history, the college said in the release.
