Hartwick College raises more than $34 million in fundraising campaign

ONEONTA, N.Y. — Hartwick College in Oneonta raised more than $34.7 million in a six-year fundraising effort it called “The Campaign for Hartwick Students: It’s Personal.”

The school originally sought $32 million, making it the “largest” fundraising campaign in Hartwick’s 219-year history, the private school said in a news release issued July 21.

Hartwick said it launched the fundraising initiative in July 2010.

The funding campaign’s capital gifts helped pay for on-campus projects that include William V. Campbell H’10 Fitness Center; the fully renovated Stack Lounge student gathering space in Dewar Hall; and “major” improvements to Moyer Pool area to create the Sally Griffiths Herbert ‘88 Aquatic Center, according to the Hartwick release.

Crews continue working on renovating the men’s and women’s locker and team rooms in Binder Physical Education Center.

Overall, 9,719 donors supported the fundraising campaign, including more than 4,200 alumni, nearly 2,400 parents, more than 1,200 “friends” and community members, and about 600 corporations, foundations, and organizations.

More than 250 employees and more than 1,000 Hartwick students also made gifts, the school added.

Hartwick raised the money for a “set of strategic initiatives with a student focus,” according to its release. They included endowment funds primarily to increase scholarship support and off-campus, experiential-learning opportunities for students.

In addition, the funding also targeted capital projects to “improve all aspects” of campus life, opportunity funds to advance special living and learning experiences, and annual giving to support ongoing operations.

Donors endowed 87 new funds and enhanced 73 existing funds through their giving to this campaign, the school said.
