Hayner Hoyt launches construction-management scholarship at Utica University

UTICA, N.Y. — Hayner Hoyt Corporation has established an endowed scholarship at Utica University for construction-management students.

The Hayner Hoyt Corporation Construction Management Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time matriculated student planning to major in construction management. The student must be in good standing with a grade-point average of 3.0 and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to female students and those recognized as historically under-represented.

Students may apply in their first full year of study. The $5,000 annual award is renewable.

“The construction industry has long struggled with diversity, and we want to help rectify that,” Hayner Hoyt President Jeremy Thurston, a 2000 graduate of Utica University and chair-elect of its board of trustees, said in a news release.

Utica University’s construction-management program combines study in management techniques with real-world learning opportunities. The program has a 100-percent job-placement rate.

“As a woman in the industry, I love it,” Audrey Cross, assistant professor of construction management at Utica University, said. “The everyday juggling of a thousand moving pieces and then watching something on paper becoming reality is truly amazing. There’s also a strong sense of pride involved, when you drive by a building and are able to say you helped construct it.”

Founded in 1966, Hayner Hoyt is a Syracuse–based commercial construction company with work experience in industries including health care, higher education, and entertainment. Recent projects include the Syracuse University Carrier Dome roof replacement, the Science Center at Utica University, and various projects at Turning Stone Resort and Casino.
