MELISSA SHERMAN, a certified family nurse practitioner, has joined the medical staff of Finger Lakes Health’s Geneva General Hospital in its hospitalist department. Sherman received her master’s degree in nursing from Upstate Medical University. She earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Keuka College and her associate degree in nursing from Finger Lakes Community College. Sherman received the Advanced Nursing Education Workforce (ANEW) Scholarship, with the mission to practice in rural and underserved communities, from Upstate Medical University.

Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and Oneida Health have hired MAYA MATHEW, M.D. as medical director of the Dorothy G. Griffin Radiation Oncology Center in Oneida, part of the Roswell Park Care Network. She comes to Central New York after serving as a radiation oncologist at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport, Mississippi. Mathew will lead a team that includes a Roswell Park medical dosimetrist and medical physicists, along with radiation therapy and nursing personnel, developing evidence-based and peer-reviewed treatment plans that follow the same quality standards as the National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Buffalo. She earned her medical degree from Kerala University in India and completed a radiation oncology residency at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago.
OSWEGO HEALTH
TAEWAN KIM, M.D., an experienced bariatric surgeon, has joined Oswego Health at the Center for Weight Loss & Surgery. Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery, he earned his medical degree and completed his general surgery residency from SUNY Upstate Medical University. In addition, Kim completed his fellowship of minimally invasive surgery Upstate Medical. He has extensive surgical experience throughout Central New York, including serving as an attending surgeon as well as an assistant professor of surgery at Upstate Medical University. In addition, he was an attending surgeon at Veteran’s Administration Hospital as well as at Crouse Hospital. Kim has performed more than 2,000 weight-loss procedures.
ROME MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
RUSSELL SILVERMAN has been appointed chief medical officer (CMO) at Rome Memorial Hospital. A member of the St. Joseph’s medical staff for more than 35 years, he has been a driving force to the growth and national recognition of the St. Joseph’s cardiac service line. Silverman has served in a variety of leadership roles. Currently, he is the medical director of Medical Cardiology and a member of National Cardiovascular Services Clinical Excellence Counsel of Trinity Health. Silverman earned his medical degree at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, where he completed his residency in cardiovascular disease in 1983. In addition to serving as CMO, Silverman will continue to provide medical cardiology to Rome–area residents in the St. Joseph’s Health Cardiovascular Institute office located on the ground floor of Rome Memorial Hospital in the Dorothy G. Griffin Cardiovascular Center.
JOSEPH’S HEALTH
HANA SMITH, a cardiologist, has joined St. Joseph’s Health in its Cardiovascular Institute. Prior to joining St. Joseph’s Health, she served as a staff cardiologist at the Guthrie Cortland Medical Center in Cortland. Smith earned her medical degree from Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, and completed her medical training with several fellowships in the United States, including the most recent one in cardiovascular disease from the Upstate University of New York in Syracuse. Smith is practicing at St. Joseph’s Health Cardiovascular Institute at Brittonfield Parkway in DeWitt and St. Joseph’s Health Cardiovascular Institute in Fayetteville. She is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and cardiovascular diseases and also holds board certifications in echocardiography and nuclear cardiology.
