NEWARK —   “Herb” Philipson’s held a grand-opening ceremony Tuesday at its new store on Route 31 in the Walmart Shopping Center in Newark (Wayne County). It’s the retailer’s eighth store in Central New York.

Gary Philipson, president of “Herb” Philipson’s, was scheduled to be joined at the ribbon cutting by other local dignitaries.

Known as “Outfitters for the Great Outdoors,”  “Herb” Philipson’s was founded by Gary’s father, Herb, in 1951 and offers “quality, brand-name merchandise at everyday low prices,” according to the retailer’s news release. Herb’s philosophy of low prices gained him a reputation as the “Price Fighter,” the release said.

The original store — in Rome — had just 800 square feet of selling space in a modest storefront location. Today, the eight “Herb” Philipson’s stores offer more than 250,000 square feet combined of fashion and work apparel; athletic, casual, work, and winter footwear; and a large selection of camping, marine, military surplus, fishing, hunting, and sporting apparel and equipment from brands such as Northface, Columbia, Carhartt, Nike, Levi’s, Under Armour, and Remington, according to the release.

“Herb” Philipson’s has locations in Oneida, Rome, Herkimer, New Hartford, Watertown, Liverpool, Syracuse, and Newark.

The Rome–based company has 250 total employees and generates annual revenue of more than $20 million, according to the Business Journal 500 publication.
