Herkimer launches Brownfield Opportunity Area Plan

HERKIMER, N.Y. — The Village of Herkimer announced it has formally launched its Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) Plan and will host a series of engagement events with Herkimer middle school and high-school students and Herkimer County Community College students.

The village was selected earlier this year as a Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) round 7 community, receiving a $10 million grant to enhance its downtown through strategic investments and projects. The village says it will announce final DRI projects in the coming months.

Herkimer is looking to build on those DRI investments and look at longer-term opportunities to revitalize underutilized sites through the BOA Plan.

The BOA Plan, which will build on the work done in the DRI, will be a publicly driven planning process to ensure the community’s priorities are at the heart of the plan’s strategies. Members of the project team will engage with students and youth at the first engagement opportunity, set for Nov. 20. The team includes representatives from the Herkimer County Industrial Development Agency, village staff, a BOA committee, and a consultant team led by LaBella Associates.

More information about the BOA Plan is available online at www.herkimerboa.com.

The New York State Department of State’s Brownfield Opportunity Area Program works with communities to revitalize underutilized properties and areas, transforming them over time from liabilities into community assets.
