Herkimer man arrested for stealing more than $5,000 in items from Lowe’s store

HERKIMER, N.Y. — A Herkimer man was arrested after allegedly pilfering more than $5,000 worth of items through the self-checkout lane at a major home-improvement store in the town of Herkimer.

Steven D. Vitalo, 29, was charged with third-degree grand larceny and second-degree falsifying business records, according to the New York State Police.

Police say Vitalo allegedly did not pay for numerous items totaling $5,521 while going through the self-checkout at Lowe’s Home Improvement, located at 182 Lowes Boulevard in Herkimer. Police also discovered Vitalo allegedly switched the barcode stickers between different items, paying significantly less for a specific item than the actual price.
