HUD awards nearly $150,000 to groups in Oswego, Utica

Organizations in Oswego and Utica will use a total of nearly $150,000 in federal funding for housing and job-training programs.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) program awarded the funding.

The City of Oswego’s community-development office will use $34,500. HUD also awarded the City of Utica’s municipal housing authority $69,000 and its Section 8 program $46,000.

U.S. Senators Charles Schumer (D–N.Y.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D–N.Y.) announced funding awards in a news release that Schumer’s office issued.

“These federal funds from the Family Self Sufficiency program will help three municipalities and housing agencies in Central New York provide the education and job training programs needed to help our most vulnerable gain the job skills needed to get back on their feet,” Schumer said.

The FSS program helps local social-services agencies, community colleges, businesses and other local organizations in providing education and job training to help those in HUD’s housing-voucher program and living in public housing.

“This funding will allow for the City of Oswego to continue to provide case management to help low income families receive the resources and tools to receive an education and/or career skills needed to move towards achieving and maintaining self-sufficiency,” Justin Rudgick, community-development director of the City of Oswego Community Development Office, said in the lawmakers’ release.
