UTICA, N.Y. — A partnership between Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) and Indium Corporation has resulted in the development of new 3D printing technologies using the fabrication lab (FABLab) at the college’s Utica campus.
MVCC supported Indium’s efforts to develop new intellectual property, novel metal 3D printing technologies, by providing the essential facilities and equipment required for research and development.
“At Indium Corporation, we partner with colleges and universities around the world to help us develop cutting-edge, innovative material solutions that enable future technologies,” Indium President/COO Ross Bernston said in a news release. “Colleges and universities help provide a strong foundation for major advances while providing students with opportunities to be leaders and innovators. We thank MVCC for their support throughout the research and development phase of this exciting new product.”
MVCC’s FABLab, part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) global FABLab network, features high-tech, industrial-grade fabrication equipment and tools. It provides a space for invention, innovation, prototyping, design, and learning for students, local businesses, and the community.
The FABLab also houses Tea Leaf Manufacturing LLC, a social enterprise of the college that provides industry-relevant learning opportunities for students while serving the needs of industry, nonprofits, entrepreneurs, and institutions. The college is also home to the Mohawk Valley Small Business Development Center and thINCubator and supports regional manufacturers through its Advanced Institute for Manufacturing, a state Manufacturing Extension Partnership Center.
