Ithaca ranks high for workforce development

ITHACA — Area Development named Ithaca as the top spot for prime workforce growth as part of the publication’s recent ranking of 365 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) across 23 economic and workforce indicators.

The publication used indicators from seven data sets originating with the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and U.S. Census American Community Survey to generate its Leading Locations list for 2012.

“The Leading Locations are MSAs that have managed to thrive and get back on their feet quickly after the recession,” Geraldine Gambale, editor of Area Development, said in a news release. “These MSAs are leaders based on their economic strengths; growth of their young, educated workforces; and recession-busting characteristics.”

Columbus, Ind. Ranked first overall, with Odessa, Texas; Lafayette, La.; Bismarck, N.D.; Fargo, N.D.; Midland, Texas; San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif.; Casper, Wyo.; and Columbia, Mo. rounding out the top 10.

Based on overall results, MSAs were ranked across nine regions as well as by three size categories — big cities, mid-sized cities, and small cities.

The full report on the Leading Locations will be published in the summer 2012 issue of Area Development and posted online at www.areadevelopment.com/LeadingLocations2012.
