ITHACA, N.Y. — The Green Street Garage in Ithaca will be closing for a reconstruction project on March 29, the Downtown Ithaca Alliance announced Wednesday.
The garage’s reopening is anticipated for late in the fall.
When complete, the new garage will include seven levels of parking, totaling 500 parking spaces.
The public can expect to see traffic-lane changes on East State Street starting next Monday followed by the temporary closure of the garage at the end of the month.
The traffic lanes on East Green Street will be shifting to accommodate the Green Street Garage Redevelopment Project, per the Downtown Ithaca Alliance. Both lanes of traffic on East State Street will be shifted about four feet to the south between South Cayuga Street and the tuning fork. The lane shift will be in place for the duration of the demolition and subsequent redevelopment on Green Street.
Due to this lane shift, the bicycle lane on this portion of East Green Street will be closed while the lane shift is in place.
As the project progresses, temporary closures of the north lane (garage side) of East Green Street “may be necessary” to accommodate demolition and redevelopment operations. Pedestrian route detours will be posted to “ensure continued safe access” to businesses and amenities on the Ithaca Commons during demolition and construction phases, the organization said.
Access to Cinemapolis, an indie-film theatre on East Green Street, will be available through the construction period, per the Downtown Ithaca Alliance.
Founded in 1997, the Downtown Ithaca Alliance is a nonprofit organization that’s responsible for the management, promotion, development, and revitalization of the Downtown Ithaca Business Improvement District.
