SYRACUSE, N.Y. — JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU) plans to begin daily, nonstop air service from Syracuse to Boston in early 2018.

The flights begin Jan. 4, 2018 and will operate year-round, according to a news release that Syracuse Hancock International Airport, issued Tuesday. Tickets went on sale the same day.

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D–N.Y.) had called on New York City–based JetBlue to increase its low-cost service options for passengers in Central New York, according to the news release.

“Today’s announcement is great news for Central New York passengers and businesses, and will allow JetBlue to build on their strong presence here in upstate New York. There is a clear demand for more flights from Syracuse to Boston and I am pleased JetBlue examined this option and responded so positively to our calls. Hancock Airport is undergoing a rapid transformation and I am thrilled JetBlue is taking advantage of that need for service,” Schumer said.

JetBlue is Boston’s largest airline, with up to 150 daily departures, and Syracuse will be the 64th nonstop destination from Boston’s Logan International Airport, JetBlue said in a separate news release.

“This is very exciting news for our region,” Christina Callahan, airport director, said. “Air-service development continues to be among the top priorities for the airport authority and to be included in JetBlue’s expansion plans is further proof of the continued growth and vitality of our airport and the region it serves.”

The JetBlue daily, nonstop service to Boston is eligible for marketing assistance from the airport authority, and Hancock Airport is working with the airline to develop a marketing plan, Jennifer Sweetland, marketing coordinator, said in an email response to a BJNN inquiry.

The Hancock news release, issued Tuesday, indicated an introductory fare of $59 one way, if booked by Wednesday.

BJNN checked on a flight from Syracuse to Boston on Jan. 5, 2018, and the JetBlue website indicated a price range from $79 to $179.
