Joanie Mahoney to be paid $209,000 salary as COO of ESF

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Former Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney started her new job as chief operating officer (COO) of the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) on Monday, the college announced.

In this position, Mahoney will oversee the overall management of the operational aspects of the ESF campus. She will report directly to David C. Amberg, the college’s interim president and serve as a member of the senior leadership team.

In addition, Mahoney will provide advice to SUNY on community-relations issues affecting two Syracuse–area campuses — ESF and Upstate Medical University.

As ESF COO, Mahoney will receive an annual salary of $209,000, according to a joint news release from SUNY and ESF. She will be paid an additional annual salary of $15,000 for her SUNY advisory role, boosting her total salary to $224,000.

The release did not disclose any additional compensation Mahoney may be receiving such as bonuses, benefit-plan contributions, or other benefits.

At ESF, Mahoney will be tasked with establishing long-term goals and strategies, and will provide insight into policy and process development, the college said. She will make recommendations on potential financial and business strategies.

 Mahoney was county executive for 11 years. She also previously served on the Syracuse Common Council, worked as a criminal prosecutor in the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office, and worked in private practice. She earned her undergraduate degree from Syracuse University’s School of Management and a law degree from the Syracuse College of Law.
