Katko: N.Y. lawmakers urge Commerce Secretary to establish semiconductor center in the state

The programs — which were authorized by the CHIPS for America Act — would support semiconductor manufacturers by advancing research on semiconductor technology.

“In light of the dire chip shortage our nation faces, we must bolster our manufacturing capabilities,” Katko said. “By providing tax incentives for semiconductor manufacturers and making New York State the site for significant national semiconductor research, we are taking vital steps that could allow Central New York to become a hub for semiconductor manufacturing.”

In addition, he joined U.S. Representative Michael McCaul of Texas and seven other members of Congress in introducing the Facilitating American-Built Semiconductors (FABS) Act.

This bill would drive long-term investment in the design and manufacturing of semiconductor chips in the U.S. by providing a 25 percent investment tax credit for costs associated with domestic semiconductor manufacturing.

Katko sees both efforts as “significant bipartisan efforts to boost domestic semiconductor manufacturing,” per the lawmaker’s office.
