Lockheed makes $500K gift to vets institute

SYRACUSE — The Institute For Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University (SU) will use a $500,000 gift from Lockheed Martin to help its efforts to aid veterans and military families make the transition to post-service life.

The gift will be used over the next three years.

“As the largest provider of [information technology] products, services, platforms, and training to the Department of Defense, Lockheed Martin supports the mission success of our nation’s military, which goes hand-in-hand with our mission of empowering those who serve the nation in uniform to make a meaningful and successful transition to civilian life,” Mike Haynie, institute executive director and founder, said in a news release. “Lockheed Martin is an exemplar for others in the private sector with regard to the firm’s commitment to veterans and military families, and we are proud to help them execute that commitment.”

The institute announced the gift last week.

Lockheed (NYSE: LMT), a major defense contractor, employs about 120,000 people worldwide and generated net sales of $47.2 billion in 2012. The company earned about $2.7 billion last year.

Lockheed employs 1,900 people at a plant in Salina and 2,700 people at a site in Owego.
